Time to hold your worksite representative elections

14 November 2017

Worksite representatives have one of the most critical roles in our union. They're the key to keeping our union alive and well at each worksite—it's reps who keep us informed, motivated, and active. Worksite reps are supported in turn with training opportunities, resources and info, and help from NZEI staff.

2018 is going to be a huge year for us all. We have two major goals for the coming year:

  • to win significant improvements for primary teachers, primary principals, and Learning Support staff, through collective bargaining
  • to secure pay equity for school support staff and early childhood education teachers

We need every member to get involved to secure these wins, and that's why it's so important to have an enthusiastic representative in every workplace.

Right now, it's time to elect your worksite rep for 2018.

So what happens now?

Each year, every worksite needs to elect at least one worksite rep. It makes sense to have a rep for each part of the sector in your workplace—for example, in schools, you should aim to have both a primary teacher and a support staff rep.

Worksite rep elections need to happen shortly. We're contacting your current worksite representatives right now with information about what to do. Each worksite should have an opportunity to vote, and we encourage every member to have their say.

And if you've ever thought about becoming a worksite rep, perhaps now's the time to put your hand up. You'll be supported every step of the way by your local networks, NZEI staff, and our training and resources.
