Ratification of Collective Agreements

The renewal of the Kaiarahi i te Reo, Therapists’, ATSSD and Special Education Assistants’ Collective Agreement 2007 – 2009 and the Support Staff in Schools Collective Agreement 2007-2009 were negotiated in November 2007.

Postal ratification ballots of the NZEI members covered by these collective agreements resulted in the highest participation rate by support staff in a ballot and the highest ratification result ever recorded by support staff.

The results of the ballot are as follows:

KRCA

For 88 (90.7%)

Against 9 (9.3%)

A total of 97 or 56% percent of members participated in the ballot.

SSCA

For 7272 (99%)

Against 75 (1%)

A total of 7,347 or 65% of members participated in the ballot.

The settlement includes a 4% pay increase from 2 January 2008 and a further 2% from January 2009 (excluding therapists), with an expiry of 1 March 2009. The 4% will not be passed on to non-members until 1 July 2008, and the 2% will not be passed on at all.

The other key part of the settlement is a commitment to a work programme with tight timeframes and parameters to look at the support staff pay scales.

Annualisation for 2008

Annualisation - what is it?

Annualisation enables support staff who do not get paid for term breaks to have their pay “annualised”. Provided it is agreed upon by the employee and employer it allows for an employee’s annual earnings to be spread across the 52 weeks of the year.

The effect is that for those weeks you are working your pay will be less than the hours you are normally paid on a fortnightly or weekly basis; but that pay is spread across the 52 weeks of the year and you will be paid during term breaks. It is the same amount of money spread across the year.

In simple terms your hours per week, the number of weeks you work per year, your leave entitlement and any Public Holidays you are entitled to are added up and divided by 52 to give a weekly annual rate. The first aid and qualifications allowances are the only annualised allowances. Other allowances such as motor vehicle allowance, dirty work allowance and meal allowance will be paid seperately, as will any extra hours you work.

If you are on sick leave you will be paid at the annualised rate provide you have an entitlement to be paid on those days.

Who is entitled to apply for annualisation?

  • Permanent employees working less than 52 weeks per year (inclusive of paid leave).

It is an annual process and you will need to apply for it again each year.

Did you know... you can get an e-Payslip?

This is available to all school staff who want to receive a payslip every pay-day. Normally payslips are only printed when there is a change in the pay of the payee. Weekly E-payslips contain additional information such as leave taken/recorded in the current pay period, length of service for sick leave purposes and annual increment date. Schools can get their staff onto e-Payslip by sending a completed School Staffing Appointment Form to their Education Service Payroll Centre. The completed form should detail the email address the employee wants the payslip sent to.
