Background on NZEI advertisments
Who is in the adverts? The first one (see above) stars Kohu Inch, a year 3 teacher at Fairburn School in Otahuhu. She originally trained as a lawyer but always wanted to be a teacher. The principal of Balmoral School, Malcolm Milner, features in the second advert, which focuses on why National Standards is the wrong answer to the challenge of moving our schools from great to excellent. Malcolm's school has been prominent in the Boards Taking Action Coalition. Go to our Speak Up for Education Youtube channel to view all of our videos.
Why is NZEI doing advertising?
NZEI has made these adverts because we believe our education system needs a broad consensus in our community and strong partnerships between policy makers, parents and the teaching profession to succeed. We're concerned that the Government is unilaterally making decisions about education that put our world-leading schools and centres at risk - cutting funding to ECE, imposing controversial and flawed National Standards, and undermining confidence in our system by constant negative attacks. We want our community to come to the party and "Speak Up" for education so that New Zealand schools and centres continue to move forward from "great" to "excellent".
