Working Women’s Charter Seminar
It is now 30 years since the Working Women’s Charter was adopted by the Federation of Labour Conference as policy. Taumata Whanonga - Video coverage
The Taumata Whanonga was held at Te Papa on 16 and 17 March 2009. Planned by the Ministry of Education in conjunction with representatives of various organisations, it focussed on behaviour issues in schools and early childhood centres. Video coverage of the keynote speakers is now available for viewing.

MR 2009/11 - Boost for status and value of Te Reo Maori
The first ever Māori language curriculum for mainstream schools has been launched by the Education Minister. They are intended to help every English-medium school in New Zealand design and shape a curriculum that includes te reo Māori.

NZEI Negotiations News (GSE Support Workers) 2009/01 - GSE support workers union claim
The GSE support workers collective agreement expires on 30 April. The pay investigation is finished and the result of the investigations will be the basis of the claim. NZEI members are asked to confirm the claim for the negotiations.

MR 2009/09 - Education workers throw weight behind pay equity
NZEI welcomes the launch of a petition calling for the reinstatement of pay equity investigations in the public sector. Last month the government announced that it was halting all further work on pay and employment equity investigations, which are aimed at addressing the pay gap between men and women. One of the investigations was due to look at the work of thousands of frontline, low paid school support staff.

International Trade Union Confederation
The 53rd Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UN CSW) opened in New York on 2 March, 2009. Shenagh Gleisner Chief Executive of the Ministry of Women's Affairs is New Zealand's representative along with Eleanor Hale. The NGO representative is Joanna Spratt of the Family Planning International.The NZ Council of Trade Unions (NZCTU) is forwarding the International Trade Union Council ITUC statement to the New Zealand delegation to ensure that they are aware of the trade union perspective and presence.
