Learning through your union

Union education - a vital tool for you and your union

Education of members is an essential tool in building a vibrant organisation and keeping your union strong.

NZEI Te RIU ROA holds regular seminars and workshops to give you the skills and knowledge to participate fully at your work site, and in your branch, District Council and the networks of NZEI. A typical workshop includes:

  • information
  • problem solving
  • discussion
  • exchange of ideas
  • skills development
  • case studies and organising projects

Employment Relations Education Leave (EREL)

A number of the seminars and workshops run by NZEI Te RIU ROA have been approved under the Employment Relations Act, so that you can be paid to attend in work time (EREL approved courses are marked with an asterisk(*). Individual members are notified by a letter from NZEI, and invited to enrol.

Priority seminars and training

To build a strong union, our members at the flax roots need to have the skills and knowledge to deal with any issue, both professional and industrial, that may arise. The following seminars and workshops are seen as important as they provide this.

This training is broken into three levels. Level One is for new site representatives, and focuses on the skills and knowledge required to be an effective NZEI site rep. Levels Two and Three build on the foundations established in Level One. They focus on practical case studies and projects to further expand your knowledge and skills.

PRT training *

These seminars are for Year One and Two provisionally registered teachers.
Year One training introduces you to the collective agreement, and what you are entitled to under it. It also looks at how you can become more involved in the union, as well as a number of professional issues. Year Two training focuses on registration and how you can resolve workplace issues quickly and professionally.
