Warrant of Fitness

If you attended an NZEI paid union meetings in October, you should have received NZEI's second “Warrant of Fitness”.  This Warrant looks at best practice reporting to parents and students, and asks whether National Standards "makes the grade". Download and discuss it with your colleagues. When you've completed it, send it back to NZEI, PO Box 466, Wellington (attention Stephanie Mills), or fax 04 385 17720.

National Standards are being introduced without any trial to check if they are 'roadworthy' – robust and supportive of student learning. NZEI has developed this checklist to help your school community 'road test' whether it is safe and appropriate for student learning to implement the National Standards in your school.

Below is a background paper which gives statements and references for further reading and reflection on each of the WoF checklist items. You can also find more information here.

School Testimonials
Schools are already using NZEI's "Warrant of Fitness" as a tool to examine the suitability of National Standards for their community.

One school writes:

"Thanks for sending out the WOF on the National Standards. So far our leadership team have looked through this and decided that all 10 criteria are a fail. We are going to share and discuss this information with the BOT and with the rest of staff in the coming week.

Our BOT and community are already working closely with other Boards and the local Principals association to lobby both our Local MPs and the Minister herself regarding the National Standards.

We have decided to take a minimalist approach to implementing the Standards, preferring to do just enough to meet requirements, while still being able to focus on what is important to us, the implementation of our own curriculum and the well being and achievement of our students as confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners.

We hope this feedback (as requested in #3 of the actions suggested on the WOF brochure) is useful to you."
