Voluntary Bonding Scheme: Information for Graduating TeachersLooking for a teaching position for 2011 and worried about paying off your student debt? You might want to consider applying for a position in a school that is in the 'Voluntary Bonding Scheme'. What the scheme providesIf you take up a full time position in one of the 300+ qualifying schools during the first 12 months after graduating you will receive $3,500 (before tax) annually for every year up to five years with the first payment made after being in the position for three years.Schools in the schemeThe schools are all either decile 1 or ‘isolated’ schools. You can find the list on the Ministry of Education website.Finding a VacancyLook in the Education Gazette vacancies section, published twice monthly, available in libraries and on-line. Check the advertised vacancies against the list of schools in the scheme, then decide whether the location of the school and the teaching position advertised would suit you for at least three years. You don’t have to stay that long but there will be no payment if you stay less than three years.Check that the position is permanentBecause of the three years requirement it is absolutely vital that you check the tenure of the position advertised. Accepting a 'fixed term' position, a long term relieving (LTR) position, a position lasting just one year or any relieving position will not guarantee employment for the three years needed to access the benefits of the scheme. To be certain of reaching at least three years in the position it must be a permanent position. If you are a NZEI member our help desk 0800 NZEI HELP (0800 693 443) can provide more information. |
