NZEI Te Riu Roa supports all kaimahi Māori in education. We are a strong voice for Māori education and the promotion of te reo me nga tikanga Māori.

During the last twenty years Mathematics in Maaori medium education has continued to evolve, develop and change. This course provided by TRCC aims to inspire teachers in the learning and teaching of Paangarau. It will include Te Poutama Tau, links to other strands, current resources and tools, link to the marautanga o Aotearoa and current research. Sessions will be in Te Reo Maaori. It aims to be a hui for teachers by teachers and will be held from 29 September to 3 October 2008 in Auckland. Read more (0.1mb pdf)

Te Marautanga o Aotearoa - Māori Medium Curriculum Draft for Consultation

Find out about what NZEI is doing about Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, the Māori medium curriculum draft that is now open for submissions. Read more about Te Marautanga, which:

  • sets the direction for teaching and learning in Māori medium primary and secondary kura. It provides pathways for Māori medium students to develop and extend their knowledge and skills across all learning areas.

  • Te Marautanga is a curriculum document for use in kura kaupapa Māori and for Māori medium classes.

  • A Teacher-Only Day has been provided for consultation on TeMarautanga o Aotearoa for all level one and level two Māori immersion schools and settings.

  • To support everyone to engage with the draft Te Marautanga o Aotearoa a translation document has been provided. The final document, however will be published in Te Reo Māori only.

About the Miro Maori strand of NZEI Te Riu Roa

Ka honoretia, ka whakamanatia Te Tiriti O Waitangi ma te haere ngatahi te Uniana me Te Reo Areare te kaunihera Maori o te NZEI.

NZEI Te Riu Roa gives honour and effect to the Treaty of Waitangi by recognising the right of Maori to have equal partnership in the union through Te Reo Areare, the Maori council of NZEI.

Te Reo Areare

Ko Te Reo Areare te mangai a motu, ki te NZEI Te Riu Roa, mo nga take Maori, te matauranga Maori, nga mema Maori. Tu ngatahi Te Reo Areare me nga Apiha Riroa a motu.

Te Reo Areare provides national leadership for NZEI Te Riu Roa on Maori issues, Maori education and for Maori members. It has an equal party relationship with National Executive.

Te Kahui Whetu

Ko nga mema Maori ano kei te whakahaere ia ratou take i roto i nga hangana a te NZEI Te Riu Roa, nga rua tekau ma rima Aronui Tomua me te Kahui Whetu.

Maori members control their own structures within NZEI Te Riu Roa, including more than 25 active Aronui Tomua and an annual hui, now known as Te Kahui Whetu.

Takawaenga

Enhancing Maori educational achievement

Te whakaniko i nga tika o nga kaimahi Maori i roto i te matauranga, te whakapiki ake i nga whainga matauranga etahi o nga mahi a te NZEI Te Riu Roa:

a. kia angitu te whakawhiti korero haerenga tangihanga, haerenga whanaungatanga, utunga pai ake, utu tapui tohu matauranga o te reo me nga tikanga.

b. Te whakahau kia maha ake nga rauemi mo te kaupapa matauranga Maori, kia maha ake nga kaiako torino ana te reo, whai wahi mo nga ratonga ki muri, nga ratonga whakapakari, hotaka whakaako.

c. te tautoko tino rangatiratanga e ahei ana ki te matauranga Maori, te whakau Te Manatu Matauranga Maori.

d. te poapoa i nga rautaki a te kawanatanga mo te maturanga Maori.

e. whakau hotaka hei whakapakari haere i nga kaiarahi Maori o te rangai matauranga.

NZEI Te Riu Roa has incorporated Maori concerns into its goals and has pledged to enhance Maori educational achievement by:

a. successfully negotiating tangihanga leave, whanaungatanga leave, and improved salaries and allowances recognising knowledge of te reo me nga tikanga.

b. campaigning for increased resources for kaupapa Maori education, and for more fluent trained te reo teachers, including the provision of pre-service and in-service teaching programmes.

c. actively supporting Maori self-determination (tino rangatiratanga) over Maori education including the establishment of a Maori education authority;

d. influencing the Government's education strategy for Maori;

e. implementing programmes that will improve Maori leaership in the education sector.
