NZEI members endorse strategic goals every year at our Annual meeting.

In September 2005 Annual Meeting agreed to the following:
Strategic Recommendations - Nga Taunakitanga Rautaki
Goal 1: Excellent support for members individually and collectively that emphasises effective organisation at every education worksite.
Goal 2: A constructive working relationship with the Government and political parties based on their recognition of NZEI Te Riu Roa members as a partner with parents, government, education unions and other education organisations in the development and implementation of education policy.
Goal 3: The negotiation of employment conditions that enable the recruitment, development and retention of highly competent personnel to maximise the provision of high quality education to all New Zealanders.
Goal 4: Schools and early childhood services functioning as professional learning communities will use evidence engaged practice to shape curriculum development and delivery, quality teaching practices, robust assessment and evaluation strategies to deliver equity and excellence for diverse learners.
Goal 5: Every school, kura kaupapa Māori and early childhood education service be fully staffed, with appropriately qualified, trained and registered teachers in teaching positions and highly skilled support staff, who are afforded on-going opportunities for professional learning.
Goal 6: The promotion in education of equal parties, participation and protection under Te Tiriti o Waitangi to enhance Māori educational aspirations.
Goal 7: Tangible recognition of the contribution of Pacific Nations to education in New Zealand and the improvement of Pacific students’ achievement.
Goal 8: The development of a robust early childhood education sector that ensures equitable access to high-quality educational programmes for all children and their families.
Goal 9: The provision of a centrally resourced, seamless, state education that enables all New Zealand children to achieve their full potential.
Goal 10: The rights of members, indigenous people and New Zealand children, must be the primary consideration in the development of any globalised models and markets in the education sector.
