World teachers day - what is happening?
Imagine the power of thousands – or tens of thousands – of students, teachers, children and parents putting their “Hands Up for Learning” at the same time!World Teachers Day this year gives us that opportunity. NZEI is asking members in schools and early childhood centres to celebrate the value of teaching and learning by joining others around the country in a synchronised “Hands Up” at 12.30pm on World Teachers Day, Friday 30 October. We encourage you to reach out to students and parents and your wider community - and ask them to join in this event.
Around NZ
A number of schools and early childhood centres around the country have told us they will be celebrating World Teacher Day in a variety of different ways. Some are doing “Hands Up” jump jams, some are making posters, and some are dressing up and having a parade. Please email stephanie.mills@nzei.org.nz and let us know what your school or centre is doing.

Why?
The theme “Hands Up for Learning!” is a call for our community to think, talk and join in activities to celebrate the power of education. It is a message about the importance of investing in education, especially in a recession. How?
Be creative! There are lots of ways of “putting your hands up” for learning, but the main idea is to have your school/centre community all doing it at 12.30pm on Friday 30 October. If we can’t set a world record for the largest number of arms up in one moment, we can at least show the power of mass support! For example you could:
- get your school or centre and parents together and “count down” to 12.30pm - then raise your hands and clap/cheer/sign “Hands Up for Learning!”
- Do jump jam/teach students to sing/play along to “Hands Up” ( for example, see www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhsaoQOYNAQ) , ending with a countdown to12.30pm
- Invite parents to a “Hands Up for Learning” shared lunch and to “learn about learning”
Learning Activities
This isn’t just an event - it’s a learning activity! It’s about students celebrating their learning and identifying why it’s important for them. Here are some ideas to get you started. Many of them are simple hand related activities that could be built into your existing plan for the day. Or maybe you would like to build a whole day around the hand theme. We know you’re creative and will have more ideas. Upload your ideas at www.teachersmatter.org.nz and upload your pictures from your celebrations there too.
- Students draw around their hand and inside each finger write something they are learning (or have learned). These can be displayed or sent home to share with parents
- Look at schools and kindergartens around the world and discuss differences and similarities
- Do finger/hand themed art-finger painting, using hand or finger outlines to make cartoon people
- Play clapping games and string games (to introduce the hand theme)
- Use fingers as the base for counting activities for the class (how many fingers do we have added together, what if we only counted fingers, not thumbs…)
- Play finger soccer (like the KFC mashies advertisement!)
- Play paper, scissors, rock.
Getting the message out
- Put up one of the Hands Up for Learning posters in this kit in your school or centre, and the other up in your community - your local library, community centre, supermarket noticeboard

- Invite parents, grandparents, your local mayor and/or local celebrities to join in your event
