Teacher Registration Information

NZEI supports teacher registration, as it protects and maintains professional standards, and ensures teacher quality. By monitoring teacher qualifications, character, practice and ongoing professional learning, registration assists with quality teaching and learning for students.

Teacher registration requirements and information can be found on the external-link-inline.gif  New Zealand Teachers Council website (www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz). NZEI provides advice to members on teacher registration and field staff can assist with individual enquiries.

General NZEI information is provided via:

Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) is not a form of registration, however NZEI advice is provided here. A LAT is an authority for a person to teach in a specified school/centre in a temporary capacity. LATs may be issued for a variety of roles but should only be used in cases where registered teachers cannot be found.

Graduating Student Teachers
Graduating student teachers can apply for provisional registration from mid November 2008, even though you may not have yet received your letter of completion from your teacher education provider. However, you must send the Council your Statement of Completion within 6 months of submitting your application form.

The process (in brief) is:
  • Download TC1 application form www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz external-link-inline.gif
  • Complete the form accurately and send it with the $120 fee to the Council (keep a copy of the application).
  • The Council will begin processing your application, and then await confirmation from you of meeting all requirements of your programme.
  • As soon as you receive your letter of completion, send a certified copy to the Council.
  • The Council will immediately finalise your application, and notify you of your provisional registration.
  • You become a registered teacher.

NZEI comments and cautions:
  • You can apply for registration prior to getting a teaching job.
  • Applying for registration now means, once you are appointed to a teaching position, salary assessment to ensure you are paid a registered teacher salary can be completed more quickly.
  • You need to be confident that you will complete your course, as the $120 fee keeps the application open only for 6 months. If you fail parts of your course and cannot complete that work within 6 months, you will lose the $120.
  • Detailed Council information about applying now is available here (0.1mb pdf).
  • NZEI information about provisional registration is available here.
