ECE / Support Staff Scholarships
Am I eligible for a NZEI Te Riu Roa Scholarship?
You are eligible if you are a teacher in an early childhood centre; or a support staff worker employed by an early childhood service, primary, area or secondary school; and you are an NZEI Te Riu Roa member.
What is the purpose of the scholarships?
To allow individual members or groups of members to advance their professional interests while providing a wider contribution to NZEI Te Riu Roa objectives.
Our objectives are to advance the cause of education, uphold the just claims of members, respect the professional status and individual rights of members, and honour the Treaty of Waitangi.
What can I use a scholarship for?

To carry out a research project in an area that interests you and/or will be of benefit to your school or centre

To complete a qualification

To attend a professional conference in New Zealand or overseas
Can I apply as part of a group?
You can put in a joint application as a school, centre or working party. The scholarship amount is $5,000 regardless of how many participants are involved.
Completion date?
The project is to be undertaken and completed during the 2011 academic year.
What are the selection criteria?
Selection is based on how well a proposal meets the following criteria:

To foster and contribute greater understanding of education sector issues

Potential impact within education
-
Potential to contribute to New Zealand’s cultural identity

The applicant’s; ability to apply and share their findings and experience with members; proven record of successful practice, training and experience; membership service - holding of office within NZEI; qualifications, training and experience.

The two phase application process
Phase One: ‘Expressions of Interest’
When do I submit my expression of interest?
The final date to submit expressions of interest is Friday 14 May 2010. Download and complete an application form, and email to geraldine.ryan@nzei.org.nz, or post to Geraldine Ryan, PO Box 466, Wellington 6011.

What happens once I've submitted?
A panel selects the expressions of interest that meet the criteria and are the most promising. The panel comprises: the National President or nominee, an external representative, a member of Te Reo Areare, a member of the National Executive Professional Committee, one Early Childhood sector representative and one Support Staff member.
Phase Two: being invited to make a full application
After the selection panel has made its decision all applicants will be notified in writing. If your expression of interest has been selected by the panel you will be invited to submit a full application.
How do I make a full application?
Applicants who progress to phase two will receive a full application pack. At this point applicants are advised to seek a mentor or peer support to help guide them through the application process.
How do I submit my Phase Two Application?
Your completed phase two application must be posted to NZEI to arrive no later than the deadline of 5pm, Friday 19 July, 2010. NZEI will only accept applications which use the official application form. |
Scholarship Timeline
Phase One: Expression of Interest
5pm, Friday 14th May, 2010: closing date for Expressions of Interest.
Early June: Successful applicants now invited to submit a Full Application. Unsuccessful applicants advised.
Phase Two: Full Application
5pm, Friday 23 July, 2010: closing date for Full Applications.
Mid August 2010: Successful and unsuccessful applicants advised.
25 September 2010: Scholarship recipients announced at NZEI Te Riu Roa Annual Meeting.
Late 2010: Recipients presented with Scholarship Certificate and Monies by their District Council.
30 June 2011: Milestone Report due.
10 December 2011: Final Report due. |

NZEI provides two $5000 scholarships every year for support staff members and two for ECE members. These scholarships provide a great opportunity to further your career.
