Relieving Teachers in CanterburyNZEI advice about teacher registration for relieving teachers employed in, or likely to be employed in, schools in the earthquake area. NZEI has been assured by the New Zealand Teachers Council Registration Manager Jenny Thomas that the Council will assist those relievers who may not have a current practising certificate, and who are willing to teach in the earthquake zone. Jenny Thomas noted that the Teachers Council is currently processing most registration applications and renewals within a few days of receiving them. If there are individual cases with some complexities, she has suggested relieving teachers should email her so the Council can provide assistance and enable the process to be completed as smoothly as possible. Do I have to be registered? You must hold teacher registration with a current practising certificate if you are to be employed in a teaching position. The exception is the 20 half days allowed under the Education Act. It is important to note that you can only teach without a practising certificate for a total of 20 half-days in one calendar year at all schools. This means that if you have already done some day-to-day relieving in schools during 2010, and intend to undertake further teaching, you may need to apply for a practising certificate. What do I do if I don’t have a current practising certificate?Apply for registration and/or a practising certificate using form TC1 or TC3 available here. You must pay the fee of $216 before the Council can process your application.Apply for registration and/or a practising certificate as soon as you are offered employment. Do not wait until the ninth day of your teaching work, as if you begin teaching without a current practising certificate and then put in your application, your application is viewed as being late and the Council will charge you a late fee of $50. The principal of your employing school must apply for an extension to continue to employ you beyond the 20 half days. Note that if you are employed in more than one school during that time, then each principal must apply for an extension for their school. The Teachers Council can usually grant these extensions within one day. NZEI information on extensions Teachers Council information on extensions
