Miro Māori - The Māori Thread Miro Māori is the Māori Thread of NZEI Te Riu Roa. NZEI supports all kaimahi Māori in education. We are a strong voice for Māori education and the promotion of te reo me nga tikanga Māori.

We honour the Treaty of Waitangi by recognising the right of Māori to have equal partnership in the union through Te Reo Areare, the Māori council of NZEI. Te Reo Areare provides national leadership for NZEI on Māori issues, Māori education and for Māori members. It has an equal party relationship with National Executive. Takawaenga and field officers provide members with advice, information and advocacy.

NZEI Te Riu Roa has incorporated Māori concerns into its goals and has pledged to enhance Māori educational achievement by:

  • successfully negotiating tangihanga leave, whanaungatanga leave, and improved salaries and allowances recognising knowledge of te reo me nga tikanga

  • campaigning for increased resources for kaupapa Māori education, and for more fluent trained te reo teachers, including the provision of pre-service and in-service teaching programmes
  • actively supporting Māori self-determination (tino rangatiratanga) over Māori education including the establishment of a Māori education authority
  • influencing the Government's education strategy for Māori
  • implementing programmes that will improve Maori leaership in the education sector.
