The Living Wage movement is set to have two important milestones.
The Living Wage rate for 2014 will be announced along with the release of the Living Wage employer trademark. Last year’s figure of $18.40 per hour will be updated to take into account any increases in costs from the last year.
NZEI will be amongst the first employers to apply for accreditation as a Living Wage organisation. With the launch of the trademark, employers will be able to start applying to be accredited as a Living Wage employer, as long as they meet the criteria of paying all directly employed and contracted staff the living wage, and giving workers access to a trade union.
NZEI Te Riu Roa is playing an active role in the Living Wage movement to highlight the issues for low paid staff working in education and the negative impact of poverty on the learning environment. Recently members staffed a stall (pictured) at a Living Wage whanau day bringing communities together in Mangere.
Is your school, kindergarten or centre looking to support the Living Wage movement? There are many ways you can do this, from becoming a Living Wage employer like North East Valley Normal School to signing up to the campaign or attending local network meetings.
